Progressive Program

Dance majors participate in a progressive program of intense technical training which is grounded in classical ballet and modern dance techniques and leads to jazz and ethnic dance studies as well as exposure to newer dance forms. Supporting these technical studies are courses in dance composition, music, dance history, anatomy and kinesiology, movement analysis, dance criticism and dance production. Performance is integrated into the training process at all levels and students are encouraged to participate in the student choreography workshops, concerts of works by faculty and guest choreographers, and the many other performances presented by the Division.

Miami is fast becoming recognized for the strength of its cultural vitality and diversity, and the NWSA Dance Division plays a major role in fostering the talent and creativity of the young dance artists and choreographers of tomorrow.

Guest Artists

Guest artists from all over the country are brought in to teach master classes in every dance form from Ballet to Hip-Hop, and guest choreographers are invited annually to set their work on students. This allows students to sharpen their ability to reproduce movement with speed, accuracy and adaptability; to experience a wider range of techniques; and to establish ties with a variety of dance professionals. Students have opportunities to perform with the New World Dance Ensemble, an ad hoc touring company, whose repertory includes works in all the dance disciplines, provides numerous performing opportunities off campus, exposes students to diverse audiences, brings prestigious recognition, and heightens dance awareness in the community. Finally student choreography workshops and performances are offered at least three times a year.

The New World School of the Arts Department of Dance is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).
